Partnering for a Greener Future: Troppos and Shona Ua-Marsh

Troppo is excited to announce our partnership with Shona Ua-Marsh, a local visionary whose work at Giggles Te Puke Early Learning Centre and Whatu+Co is deeply rooted in sustainability and growth. Shona’s philosophy mirrors the principles of a food forest: nurturing the ground, fostering symbiotic relationships, and providing for the future.
Shona’s life is a testament to this nurturing approach. Her values, passed down from her parents, emphasize manaakitanga (kindness) and commitment. She applied these principles to her center, creating a family-like environment where tamariki (children) of all ages learn together. This unique Whānau Centre model fosters tuakana-teina relationships, where older children guide and support younger ones, much like how different plants in a food forest support each other.
Our partnership will focus on bringing her educational vision to life through plants and food forest initiatives. Shona’s business, Whatu+Co, creates educational resources that connect children to te ao Māori and the whenua (land). By providing plants and expertise, we can help Giggles Te Puke and other centers establish their own māra kai (gardens). . These gardens will serve as living classrooms, where children can learn about sustainable practices, food production, and their cultural connection to the land.
This partnership is a natural fit. We believe that by teaching children how to grow their own food, we are not only providing a practical skill but also instilling a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment. Shona’s dedication to Mātauranga Māori and her holistic approach to education make her an ideal partner as we work together to cultivate a greener, more sustainable future.
