Troppo: Cultivating a Tropical Future in Te Puke
Troppo is more than just a nursery; it is a vibrant, tropical urban food forest and a cornerstone of the Vector Group Charitable Trust’s mission to redefine food security. As a sister initiative to Grow Te Puke, KaiResilience.food, Kiwifruit.Capital, and Te Puke Digital, Troppo focuses on the exotic, the edible, and the extraordinary.
We are dedicated to proving that with the right knowledge and community support, we can grow a “backyard supermarket” that defies local climate expectations.
Our Roots & Vision
Our journey in the kai resilience space began in 2011 with our first food forest installation in Samoa. Inspired by the late Owen Mania Takuira-Ngaropo and the Rock community gardens, we have spent over a decade cultivating spaces that nourish both the body and the soul.
Troppo serves as the “tropical engine room” for the Grow Te Puke network. While the wider trust initiatives provide the framework for community engagement and traditional gardening, Troppo specializes in:
-
Unique Food Forests: Developing urban spaces that mimic natural ecosystems.
-
Specialized Nursery: Propagating tropical and subtropical species (like our Musa Zebrina – Blood Banana) that thrive in our unique microclimates.
-
Skill Sharing: Teaching the community how to manage diverse, high-yield ecosystems.
The Vector Group Ecosystem
Troppo operates in synergy with our wider charitable initiatives to create a holistic, resilient community:
-
Grow Te Puke: Our hub for seeds, seedlings, and backyard empowerment.
-
KaiResilience.food: Driving the strategy for a sustainable regional food system.
-
Te Puke Digital: Ensuring our community has the digital tools to share knowledge.
-
Kiwifruit.Capital: Te Puke Online Connecting our local heritage with future innovation.
Why “Troppo”?
